TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)--An initiative to prevent house fire is wrapping up in Tallahassee.

Tallahassee Fire Captain Christopher Meeks says of the 50 green bulbs on the wreath at Dorothy B. Oven Park, 15 have had to be replaced with red ones in 2015. The wreath was put up Monday, November 23.

That means they responded to 15 house fires since then. The program ends January 3.

Meeks says since they started the program the number of red bulbs on the wreath have gone down.  When this program started in 2010, 41 bulbs turned red.

Meeks says remember to make sure smoke detectors are working. Check your batteries twice a year. He says do not overload outlets.
