TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The Tallahassee Hazardous Materials Team was called to the Florida Department of Corrections after an employee opened an envelope from an inmate that contained a white powder.

At about 4:50 p.m., the Tallahassee Fire Department received a call in response to a suspicious letter containing white powder at the Florida Department of Corrections on South Calhoun Street.

TFD says a Department of Corrections employee stated she opened a letter from an inmate, and then a small amount of white powder came out of the envelope.

Due to the nature of the incident, TFD Hazardous Material Team was called in order to safely survey, contain, and diminish the potential hazard.

TFD states a primary and secondary HazMat team in full personal protective equipment entered into the building, making their way to the fourth floor office where the letter was found.

After testing and sampling the product, it was found that there was no threat present.

TFD HazMat team packaged the envelope and letter, securing it in order to hand it over to the Tallahassee Police Department as evidence.

The employee was medically assessed once she was allowed to exit the building.

There were no injuries reported on scene.
