Telephone Scam With LCSO Impersonator

Valdosta, GA (WTXL) -- Reports of a telephone scam in Valdosta where the caller claims to be a lieutenant of Lowndes County Sheriff's Office have surfaced in Valdosta.

Victims of the scam identified the caller as a male going by the name Lieutenant Kaufman, according to police.

The report shows that caller claimed there was an active warrant out for each of the victims and that the warrant could be handled by purchasing a "Green Dot card".

After purchasing the "Green Dot Card", the victims were given a number to call back. Police say, the numbers given are no longer in service.

Lieutenant Stryde Jones of LCSO said the telephone scam is making rounds around the city and county.

Both of the victims lost a "substantial" amount of money.

If you receive a call like this, hang up, do not give any personal or financial information and record the telephone number. Report any suspicious calls to your local law enforcement.
