VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL)--A teenager in Valdosta is honored this week by the fire department for an act of heroism
The Valdosta Fire Department says 14-year-old Najee Harris rescued two elderly neighbors from their home on Prince Cove Circle that caught fire last month. Fire chief Freddie Broome says that it's likely Najee's heroic actions saved the lives of the two residents.
"According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, most fire victims die from smoke or toxic gases, not from burns," said Chief Broome. "Although, Najee has promised me he will not enter anymore building fires, it is inevitable that his heroic actions saved the lives of two citizens and aided the Valdosta Fire Department in prioritizing their ground operations to quickly extinguish the fire."
Najee received his award to kick off national fire prevention month, where the Valdosta Fire Department will be out at city schools and senior communities talking about fire safety, hosting puppet shows at the mall, and giving station tours.
