SARASOTA, Fla. (AP) — A Sarasota elementary gym teacher has quit her job over allegations that she was intoxicated during school.

The Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports another teacher noticed Renee Tapia was slurring her words and acting strangely around 11:30 a.m. one day in September.

School district officials say Tapia was placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation. Three days later, she turned in her resignation, effective Oct. 16. That's one day after the school board is expected to approve her resignation.

Superintendent Lori White wrote a letter to Tapia in late September, saying she's found probable cause to terminate her employment.

Tapia told the newspaper she's going through a difficult time following the deaths of her parents. She began working for the district in August 1977.
