ORLANDO, FL (WKMG/CNN) – The mother of an eighth grader is unhappy with the school’s response after the girl says her teacher got mad and threw a pair of scissors in class that struck her in the face.
Jeymi Olivera says she learned about the incident, which left scratches on her daughter’s face, from the girl’s Snapchat messages, not the school.
"They really didn't say much. I feel like they really didn't make it a thing,” Olivera said.
Olivera’s daughter says her Westridge Middle School science teacher, who is not being identified because he has not been charged with a crime, got angry with another student.
"He was cursing. He kept saying a couple words,” Olivera said.
The teacher then allegedly grabbed scissors from the student’s hands and threw them across the room. The scissors ricocheted off a whiteboard and hit Olivera’s daughter in the face.
"I understand we're human [and] we get mad. But we teach them not to run with scissors. Why are you throwing scissors in class?" Olivera said.
Olivera says the school’s reaction Friday afternoon made things worse. Her daughter says she reported the incident to a counselor, but the school didn’t inform Olivera.
"I was angry. I was confused. I was upset,” Olivera said.
By Monday afternoon, the teacher was fired from the school district, but Olivera says the discipline only occurred after she intervened.
The mother also says the incident should have never happened, and had it been the other way around – if her daughter had thrown the scissors – she believes the school’s punishment would have been immediate and harsh.
