TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Much of the country is recognizing today as National Elder Abuse Awareness day.
As Florida's senior population is expected to grow, to more than 7.1 million by 2030, the number of people more vulnerable to becoming victims of financial crimes is also on the rise.
Between 2015 and 2016, the Florida Department of Elder Affairs reported more than 8,000 cases of seniors falling prey to fraudulent schemes and scams.
It's for that reason that experts in fraud prevention were on hand at the Tallahassee Community College Workforce Development Building today for a summit on elder abuse and fraud prevention.
The goal is to remind us all that the aging community deserves dignity and respect. Tips were shared for keeping the financial resources of the elderly protected.
The program included presenters, a keynote speaker, exhibitors, free lunch, door prizes, and free respite care for families who need this while they participate in the event.
