TB Tests Ordered at Jacksonville School

Posted

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida health officials have ordered tuberculosis tests on about 150 students and staff members at a Jacksonville high school after a student was hospitalized with the disease recently.

The Florida Department of Health in Duval County has sent students home with parental permission slips for testing scheduled to begin Wednesday.

Health department Director Kelli Wells tells the Florida Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1sBfAni) that some students and staffers will likely test positive for exposure to TB.

Wells says a positive test does not mean someone has the disease, just that they've been exposed to the germ.

She says parents should not keep students out of school because any exposure has already occurred.

If they find an active case, the person will be put on medication, removing further exposure risk.
