TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A woman, who deputies said was wanted for attempting to cash a fraudulent check at a convenience store, turned herself in on Thursday.

Leon County Sheriff's Office deputies said that they were looking for Ashley Johnson after they received a report that a person matching her description tried to cash a fraudulent check at the King Food Store on South Adams Street.

An employee at the store told deputies that a black female entered the store on May 11th, and tried to cash a check from Two Maids & A Mop maid service.

The employee said they called the company and was told by the owner that the check had to be fraudulent because she had no employee by the name of Ashley Johnson. Once the employee made a copy of the check, he told deputies that he asked Johnson for identification. Johnson then grabbed the check and left the store.

After speaking to the employee over the month of May, deputies were able to pinpoint Johnson's identity, cellphone number, and address.

On August 17th, deputies went to the address connected to Johnson on Bermuda Road and interviewed her. Johnson eventually told deputies that she got the check from a light-skinned black woman named, "Red".

Johnson told them that she was supposed to cash the check made out for just under $650 and keep $100 of it while giving the rest to "Red".

Johnson was charged with uttering a forged check and grand theft. She was in Leon County Jail but bonded out on Thursday.
