TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Tallahassee woman has been charged with grand theft after an investigation revealed she made-up fictional children to receive almost $35,000 in public assistance.
Angel Miller was arrested and charged with grand theft (over $20,000).
According to an investigator at the Florida Department of Financial Service's Division of Public Assistance Fraud, Miller fraudulently received food stamps and medical benefits for over five years.
Court documents say that from March 2012 to October 2017, Miller wrote on applications to the Department of Children and Families her boyfriend and her five children lived with her.
However, an investigation revealed that three of the children Miller had reported over the years "never existed."
Investigators also discovered that Miller's boyfriend and their mutual child had stopped living with Miller in February 2012. In fact, the boyfriend and child weren't even residents in the state of Florida, according to the investigator's findings.
Through 15 fraudulent applications, Miller received at total of $34,977 in public assistance.
As a result of the findings, a warrant was issued for Miller's arrest on April 3. Miller was taken into custody almost a month later on Tuesday and, as of Wednesday, remains in jail on a $5,000 bond.
