TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - An Olympic sport now has a home in the Capital City.
The Tallahassee Table Tennis Club had its first meeting Saturday morning. Two dozen players got in on the action Saturday at the Northside Community Center.
The club offers open play, tournament play, and coaching from certified instructors. One of the goals the club has is to encourage more people to get involved in the sport.
Coaches say table tennis is an exercise of the body and mind, and appeals to all ages.
"The fun thing about table tennis leagues is that you can have a bunch of these old guys here that are actually really good, and they will spank the high school kids and then, you can have elementary kids that are also competing. So, he always says 'from 8 to 80.' Table tennis is for everyone, and so, we want to bring that environment and raise up players in that system," said Coaches Willy Leparulo and Logan Zimmerman.
The club hopes to host tournaments to bring competitors to Tallahassee and boost the local economy.
For now, sessions are Saturday mornings from 9 to 11 a.m. and Wednesday nights from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Northside Community Center.
