TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Just over a week ago a devastating fire took the life of a child and left the mother in the hospital.

The American Red Cross of Tallahassee is now trying to help in the recovery process.

The Red Cross has visited every apartment at Rockbrook Garden Complex as well as homes in the area offering safety tips and ways to fix or install smoke alarms.

The Executive Director of the ARC of Tallahassee says, it's important to make sure you have a working smoke alarm.

"I think people take it for granted, it is not going to happen to them for one thing, then when the beeping starts going off and the batteries get low it's annoying," Executive Director Sharon Tyler said. "People take the battery out with good intention of changing it and installing a new one and just forget."

Tyler reminds everyone, if you think your fire alarm is not working or don't have one, The Red Cross will come to your house and check or install a new fire alarm in your home.
