TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Tallahassee Police are warning citizens and business owners about an ongoing scam regarding utility service providers.

TPD says that fraudsters are calling people around the country, claiming to be utility service providers. They tell someone that their account is past due and without immediate payment, their utility services will be disconnected.  Police say that then, they're instructed to buy a prepaid card.

According to police, fraudsters then ask for the pin for the card, leading the citizen or business owner to lose money when it's transferred over.

Tallahassee Police said they have received reports similar to this in the city. They said the city's utilities would not request customers to make payments in that manner.

If you receive a suspicious phone call from someone claiming to be a utility service provider, hang up and verify the status of your account by contacting the City of Tallahassee Utilities department at 850-891-4YOU.
