TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Police tracked down a man Wednesday who stole firearms and ammunition from a U.S. Army recruiter's storage unit.
According to Tallahassee Police, U.S. Army recruiter Nicholas Sperrey had a a majority of his belongings in a U-Haul storage unit while looking for a permanent place to live. This included multiple firearms and ammunition.
On Tuesday, Sperrey's wife noticed that a majority of the items in the storage unit was missing, including the weapons, ammunition, military apparel, GPS, night vision, and ballistic vests.
The Leon County Sheriffs Office got a call about weapons found in a dumpster. After working with TPD to locate the weapons, police say that they discovered that they belonged to Sperrey.
TPD says they found a witness, Curtis Rollins, who was hired by an acquaintance named "Jimmy" to remove the weapons from the dumpster. Police say that Rollins was under the belief that the storage unit belonged to Jimmy, including a gun safe that belonged to Sperrey.
Rollins told police that he later found Jimmy banging on the gun safe in order to get it open.
Using descriptions provided by Rollins and his girlfriend, TPD found a possible match at the El Camino Lodge on Woodville Highway. Police say they found a suspect, Robert Segrest, and Rollins identified him as Jimmy.
Tallahassee Police say that Segrest was arrested and charged with burglary of a structure, grand theft of a firearm, grand theft, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. TPD says that he was found guilty of grand theft back in 2007 and is currently on probation until April 2016.
