TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A ceremony was held to remember and honor their homeless neighbors who have died this past year.

Last night's event was part of the national Homeless Persons' Memorial Day.

In Tallahassee, it's estimated about 17 homeless individuals died, though many of them didn't get a funeral or have loved ones gather in their memory.

Some of those who participated in the ceremony didn't realize their friend had passed on until they saw their name listed.

Although memorial services like this one are emotional, those in attendance know their fellow homeless neighbors are in a better place.

Fellow homeless individuals and caseworkers honored the memories of the deceased by sharing stories.

The service ended with everyone singing Amazing Grace.
