TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Dozens headed to the Tallahassee National Cemetery Sunday afternoon for a special event to honor those who died in the line of duty.

The ceremony included remarks from U.S. Representative Gwen Graham and presentations from the American Legion, Big Bend Honor Guard and Bugles Across America.

Organizers say this event is particularly special to the cemetery because it's their first Memorial Day service since they've opened.

"This is a somber day for us," said James Mears with the National Guard. "We remember those that have fallen either in combat or for whatever reason and they've gone before us. And we remember their memories, remember who they are, who they were, and their families they left behind."

"It means a lot, because I've had a handfull of people that were killed in various wars, and there were a lot of World War II and Korean (War) guys, not just Vietnam (War) guys," said army veteran Bill Kappes. "It means a lot. My next door neighbor was killed in Vietnam."

The national cemetery will open Monday at 8:00 a.m. and close at 4:30 p.m.
