TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum is welcoming children and families from all across the region to Tallahassee as a part of Family First Week.
“We are striving to build a community that understands and embraces the importance of investing in children and families,” said Mayor Gillum. “Family First week allows us another opportunity to continue our community’s development as a more dynamic and nurturing place for children and families to grow strong.”
Events and Information:
- On October 30th, Whole Child Leon will host its free bi-annual developmental screening event. The developmental screening program is a collaboration of partners and service providers to provide early intervention services for the children of the Tallahassee area. The assessments will be available for the following areas: Vision, Hearing, Motor Skills, Speech, Language, Cognitive, Behavior, Growth, and Dental.

- On October 31st, The Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend will host the 2nd Annual Race 4 Readiness. “The Early Learning Coalition of the Big Bend’s Race 4 Readiness is so much more than a 5K and 1 mile fun run,” said ELC CEO Matt Guse. “It’s an opportunity for us to share important early childhood information with parents and members of the community. This year, our focus is on literacy and the important role it plays in child development and preparing young children for kindergarten.”

- On November 4th at 1pm in the City Commission Chambers, Join the FSU College of Medicine and the Office of the Mayor for the First Words/Autism Navigator’s Briefing. The event will share new resources and tools focused on early childhood development for families and professionals. "We are excited to share our new online resources and tools for families and professionals,” said Amy M. Wetherby, Ph.D., FSU College of Medicine. “With the momentum of Mayor Gillum’s Family First Initiative, we should see an immediate impact on children and families in Tallahassee. This opportunity to collaborate with Reverend Evans, Mayor Gillum, and other key stakeholders in the State will allow us to change children’s learning trajectories at a very young age to impact on school success.”
- On November 7th from 10am-2pm in Kleman Plaza, Family First Week will conclude with the Family First Expo and Fun Day. The expo will feature health, vision, and dental, screenings with fun for kids and their families. Along with Bond Community Health Center, the Early Learning Coalition, and Who We Play For, the Expo will bring local partners together to give a snapshot of available services for families in Tallahassee.
