Tallahassee Leaders Set 2016 Goals

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Tallahassee city leaders met Wednesday at the Tallahassee International Airport to set goals for the upcoming year.

They covered a variety of topics concerning quality of life, infrastructure planning, economic development, and community safety. Commissioners considered continued efforts to develop a community school on the city's southside, after failing to secure funding to do so last year, as well as expanding the senior center.

Another hot topic was addressing gun violence in the Capital City.

Commissioner Curtis Richardson says "it's an issue that we have got to put a priority on, which we have done. We've budgeted for 33 additional police officers that will be working in the community implementing the community policing model where police officers rather than looking to necessarily arrest people -- but they will be, those that commit the crimes -- but, developing relationships with the community so that the people feel comfortable with them, the communicate with them, and they can be their eyes and ears when they are not around."

Commissioners are also looking at instituting a summer jobs program for the city's youth, and talked about ways they could work with Tallahassee Police and the city's parks and recreation department on the issue.
