TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) – Organizers say around 1,000 people in the Tallahassee area struggle with finding a place to sleep on any given night.
That's why the annual sleep out event is raising awareness about the work being done to combat this issue.
Connecting Everyone with Second Chances, Capital City Youth Services and the Big Bend Homeless Coalition are asking you to give up the comforts of your home and sleep in Lewis Park Thursday tonight.
The 60 brave participants raise funds, which directly support services these organizations provide to help struggling community members.
"Since Hurricane Michael's gone through, we've seen the issue of homelessness really become a big issue for us because families are moving into our communities that are in dire need of help," said Kevin Priest. "We deal with this issue all year long, so ultimately we're just trying to bring people to the issue to help when they're needed most."
Priest also said the money raised each year has a lasting impact for families in need.
The three organizations hosting this event provide emergency shelter and food, employment, health care and supportive services to hundreds in nearby communities.
