TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - The United Nations designates December 18 as International Migrants Day.
On Tuesday, several groups in Tallahassee pushed for action to help those at the U.S.-Mexico border who are seeking asylum.
About 30 people stood outside the Historic Old Capitol Tuesday afternoon.
They called for migrant justice in the face of President Trump's "zero tolerance" policies.
Some in the crowd represented communities of faith in the Capital City.
One of them urged Florida lawmakers to consider the current crisis from a Biblical perspective.
"This is your opportunity. If you turn your backs on these families seeking asylum, you turn your backs on Jesus himself," said Reverend Sheldon Steen of Faith in Public Life. "You cannot worship the baby born in Bethlehem and turn away from the baby at the border who needs our help."
The groups also turned on electric candles to remember the life of a Guatemalan girl who died in U.S. Border Patrol custody.
