TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Firefighters are keeping a close eye on college students as they make their way back into the Capital City, giving them tips on how to stay safe throughout the school year.

Tallahassee Fire Department says each residence should have working smoke alarms in each bedroom and on each level of a unit.

TFD says it gets 200 to 300 fire-related calls at local campuses every year.

The most frequent type of fires crews respond to on campus are cooking-related.

Captain Mike Bellamy says staying educated before the semester starts will help students cut down on incidents: "Many of these young men and women are moving out of their home for the first time. Also, if you're an RA or you're responsible for your apartment complex, for your student housing, we see a less occurrence there of fire where there's RA's going and doing education and talking to their residents about being fire-wise."

TFD says there are about 8 to 10 fire fatalities every year on college campuses nationwide.
