TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A local elementary school got an award from the U.S. Secretary of Education on Tuesday.

Hawks Rise Elementary School was named a National Blue Ribbon School because of their ability to close achievement gaps for all kinds of students attending the school according to the Leon County Schools (LCS).

LCS says this is the second time the school has received the honor, the last time being in 2000.

"Our entire community is proud of Hawks Rise for this prestigious accomplishment," said Superintendent Jackie Pons. "I want to recognize the outstanding work of the students, teachers and parents for solidifying Hawks Rise as one of the best schools in the nation. Congratulations to Principal Friend and all of her staff on an outstanding job."

This is also the tenth time a school in the district has been named a Blue Ribbon School.
