TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Tallahassee earned the Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community award on Thursday.

The award recognizes communities for supporting and offering safe routes for bicycling.

Tallahassee was one of seven Florida communities awarded.

City officials say, smart growth policies and bicycling infrastructure, including miles of trails and protected lanes, led to the recognition.

The city has made strides in promoting safe, two-wheel transportation. Because of this, Tallahassee has seen more friends, neighbors and family members cycling in Tallahassee.

"All new roads we look at, we see if we can add bicycle facilities to those," said Heather Teeter with the City of Tallahassee.

Tallahassee was originally recognized in 2009 as being a friendly bicycle community.

New bike lanes and a Pace Bike Share Program, led to the city receiving an even higher award designation this year.
