TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- Just days before Christmas, a husband and wife are trying to pick up the pieces after losing their home and two of their pets in a fire.
According to the Tallahassee Fire Department, the fire started just before 7:50 Tuesday evening. When they arrived at the home on the 1900 block of Vineland Lane, heavy smoke and fire were coming from the roof.
Both the husband and wife were able to escape the fire with one of their three dogs. The other two did not survive the fire, according to TFD.
A neighbor says the couple had lived in the house for more than 20 years. They had no children -- just the three dogs.
Damages are estimated to be around $300,000 and the cause of the fire in unknown at this time. The Red Cross is assisting the two, who were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
"These individuals will be receiving the cash assistance, not only for clothing and food replacement, but also they'll get a portion of money that will help them with lodging, whether that be a hotel stay or something," said Nicole King with the American Red Cross - Capital Area Chapter.
In addition to the Red Cross, neighbors are working together to help the couple. A neighbor says the three dogs belonged to the same litter and have never been separated.
