TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - A unique event called “The Longest Table” took place this past weekend. A community event started by Mayor Andrew Gillum, allows residents in Tallahassee to come together and join in conversation over dinner.
“...Gathering together to share a meal, to talk to people you might never come in contact with is just an awesome opportunity that we couldn't resist,” says Amber Meo, one of the host for this year’s longest table event.
One hundred different locations in the Tallahassee area hosted the event this year. Discussions revolving around topics such as; education, local elections and law enforcement took place at the dinner table.
Community members were joined by local leaders, which gave them the opportunity to directly address concerns.
Nico Winders, another community member said “We didn't have to go through commission, reports and this... anybody could talk openly and give Mayor Andrew Gillum ideas and feelings about what we felt regarding the community.”
Participants in this event are able to host an event or attend one. The Longest Table follow two simple rules according to The Village Square.
You must have a single conversation at each table (rather than side conversations)
The participants must be racially, ethnically, ideologically, or religiously diverse.
Officials are hoping to have another Longest Table in the fall at one set location.
