TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Community members packed into the Leroy Collins Public Library Monday night to learn how to preserve and protect Florida's Apalachicola Forest.

Friends of the Apalachicola National Forest hosted the event, that focused on how to preserve and protect natural habitats and native wildlife.

The featured speaker at last night's meet up was Wildlife Fire Scientist, Kevin Hiers.

He has worked in prescribed fire science for nearly 20 years, publishing over 50 pieces of work.

"We conduct fire operations that hopefully persist of only one burn period so one single day," said Hiers. "Then we conduct what we call mop up where we go out into a burn unit from the edges towards the interior and put out any smoldering fire or any active burning at the time the fire is done."

The Friends of ANF provide input to the USDA Forest Service on issues related to management of the Apalachicola National Forest.
