TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) -- The Tallahassee Community College is in the process of negotiating a collective bargaining contract. The administration and teachers are struggling to agree on ideas.
Teachers at Tallahassee Community College have been in negotiations for over a year with much frustration and little progress to show for the effort. The teachers union at T.C.C. claims the administration is not bargaining in good faith and calls the current impasse unprecedented.
The administration stresses the delay is part of the negotiation process and does not mean the two sides have stopped working toward a solution. Since the 2 sides could not come to an agreement, the impasse was considered necessary.
A hearing will be scheduled, giving both sides the opportunity to present their case to a magistrate, who will in turn give his or her findings to the board of trustees. The trustees will then decide to accept or reject the proposal. All the different points from the teachers and administration can come together to find a balance between the opposing ideas.
The administration strives to recognize the faculty for their talent and hard work in and out of the classroom. The 75% of the teachers that are union members feel the need to preserve T.C.C. the way it is. In the end, the hope is for the administration and faculty to come together as a family working in the best interests of the school.
Although neither side will get exactly what they want, there will be a contract and the school will continue to move forward. At the November 6th session, both of the opposing sides will bring new ideas or adjust current ones to find an agreement.
