TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Wednesday marked the first day of the historical celebration of Kwanzaa.
It's a celebration of African-American culture and is practiced throughout the world.
Kwanzaa has seven core principles focused on the seven days of the celebration and they are: Unity, self determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith.
Wednesday's value celebrated is unity.
One leader within the Kwanzaa community here in Tallahassee, expresses how meaningful this time of the year is.
"This celebration which was developed in the late '60s was designed to help us to begin to address some of the things that we lost as a result of our oppression and to help us become more united and connected as a community," said Huberta Jackson-Lowman, Coordinator for the Tallahassee Community Healing Coalition.
A Kwanzaa celebration will be held at Jack McLean Park from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
