TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - Community members and public officials at the Wednesday night Tallahassee Commission meeting had a lot on their minds.
The meeting ended a little before 10 p.m. and Commissioners not only accepted several millions of dollars of money from a BP oil spill settlement, they also voted on a 23% property tax increase and to allow Uber to operate in Tallahassee.
Michelle Bono, the Assistant to the City Manager, spoke with WTXL after the meeting about some of the items discussed.
One highly anticipated item voted on at the meeting was the millage rate increase. Commissioners approved a 23% property tax increase which Bono says will create a $7.08 a month increase for an average resident with a $150,000 home.
Another item approved by the commission was the regulation to allow Uber drivers to operate in Tallahassee. Bono says drivers will be required to have a permit and proof of insurance but that this would not affect Uber rates.
City Commissioners also voted to approve a "Downtown to University" bike lane that they say would make it easier and safer to get around the Capital City by bicycle.
An item that did not make it to a vote was whether or not to get rid of a loophole in a city regulation that keeps some bars open past 2:30 a.m., even though under alcoholic beverages code, all alcoholic beverage establishments must close at that time. Bono says that the issue will be brought up at a later time but as of now no date has been set.
