TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)-- Tallahassee City Commission debates the necessity of a question on job applications that could change the dynamics of the applicant pool.
It's called "ban the box" and the commission is debating banning the box on city job applications that asks potential employees if they've ever been convicted of misdemeanor or felony.
The goal is to help remove barriers for people with former convictions
and ensure job candidates are measured by their merits and qualifications first.
The change on applications would not affect employment procedures, and does not remove criminal background checks during the hiring process.
The policy would only affect city employment. Last year more than 17 hundred former inmates returned to Leon County.
