TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - More details are being revealed on what lead to two carjackings and a chase through Tallahassee.
Devante Harris, 22, has been charged with two counts of carjacking, three counts of kidnapping during the commission of a felony, aggravated battery, battery on an officer, fleeing and eluding, resisting without violence, and property damage in connection with the incident.
According to court documents, Harris' mother called police to their home on Chandalar Lane Wednesday for a mental health check.
When a Leon County Sheriff's deputy arrived, the mother told him that Harris had been making suicidal statements.
"Initially Harris did not fit the criteria to be taken into custody under the Baker Act," a deputy wrote in an arrest report. However, the deputy soon learned Harris was armed with a knife inside the kitchen.
When the deputy approached Harris, he told Harris to put the knife down. Harris complied at first, but started running towards the deputy and pushed him in the chest before running past him.
The deputy wrote that Harris kept running toward Tally Ann Drive before the deputy lost sight of him.
After running toward Tally Ann for a while, documents say Harris forced his way into victim's car near the bus stop in the area of Tally Ann and Wenonga Court.
The victim, who told deputies her two children were inside the car at the time, said that Harris slipped into the back seat of her unlocked car and said, "Drive, I got a gun. I'll kill you." The victim was then directed to drive until Harris got out of her car in the area of Chaires Cross Road and Minnie Rose Road.
That's when the victim says Harris began to harass passing vehicles, even beating on one car before jumping on the hood.
Eventually, one of the drivers spotted Harris standing in the middle of road and stopped and to ask Harris if he was okay. The driver told deputies Harris replied, "No I'm not okay," and proceeded to snatch the driver's side door open.
Harris hit the driver in the face with a large piece of wood before physically removing the driver from the car. Harris then got in the vehicle and sped off, leaving the victim behind.
Later on, the stolen vehicle was spotted near I-10 and Thomasville Road. Multiple Tallahassee Police officers tried to stop the car, but Harris kept speeding away, leading them on a chase.
Eventually Harris stopped behind a business on Thomasville Road, got out the car and started running. Thanks to a deputy and his K9 partner, law enforcement was able to finally apprehend Harris.
Harris was taken to the Leon County Jail where, as of Thursday, he remains.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A car chase after a carjacking Wednesday morning ended with a subject in custody.
Leon County Sheriff's Lt. Grady Jordan says the original carjacking call came in from the area of Chaires Cross Road and Minnie Rose Lane Wednesday morning.
A little while later, law enforcement saw the stolen vehicle in the area of Eastgate and Capital Circle.
The suspect lead deputies on a chase through the area, but they were eventually able to stop it at Thomasville and Betton.
The the subject, now identified as 22-year-old Devante Harris, bailed out of the car but, with the help of a K-9 team, he was taken into custody.
Jordan said they got the call about 7:42 a.m. and the incident ended about 8:13 a.m.
Harris was charged with two counts of carjacking, three counts of kidnapping during the commission of a felony, aggravated battery, battery on an officer, fleeing and eluding, resisting without violence, and property damage.
So far it is unclear why Harris has been charged with kidnapping, aggravated battery and battery on an officer.
