TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- On Monday, April 15, the City of Tallahassee’s Underground Utility department will begin work on two separate projects that will impact Old Bainbridge Road, Orange Avenue and Blair Stone Road.

The work along Old Bainbridge Road will replace aging underground utility infrastructure. At more than 60 years old, the water system underneath the roadway is at the end of its useful service life. Replacement is necessary to avoid future water interruptions to area residents and to ensure that the City’s high standards for clean and reliable water services are met for years to come.

Construction will take place on Old Bainbridge Road between West Brevard and Tharpe streets. Work will take place during the weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and on some weekends in order to minimize traffic impacts. Due to the location of the water system underneath the roadway, area residents and motorists should expect some localized lane and road closures, as well as periodic detours. Variable message boards and barricades will clearly route traffic around the construction zones. Project information including a detour map is posted on Talgov.com.

At the end of each evening’s construction activities, the travel lane(s) will be re-opened to traffic. Construction from Alabama to Tharpe streets is expected to be finished by July, and the remaining work from Alabama to Brevard streets is expected to be completed by October. Leon County will come in after construction is complete for each section to resurface Old Bainbridge Road.

Due to construction on Old Bainbridge Road, StarMetro’s Moss route will be rerouted. To view a map of the detour, please follow this link.

Across town, the Underground Utility department will also begin work to install underground utility infrastructure under Orange Avenue and within Blair Stone Road. This project, when completed, will provide sewer service to properties along Orange Avenue and Blair Stone Road and improve the City’s ability to manage the sanitary sewer system during service interruptions along Capital Circle.

Construction will be conducted in phases, with the first phase occurring on Orange Avenue between Jim Lee Road and Blair Stone Road. During this phase, the eastbound lanes of Orange Avenue will be closed, and the westbound lanes will be converted to two-way traffic. This traffic pattern is anticipated to last for approximately 90 days.

Following completion of the first phase, the second phase will use a similar traffic pattern along Blair Stone Road, closing the southbound lanes and converting the northbound lanes to two-way traffic. The second phase is anticipated to last for approximately six months.

Motorists are reminded to reduce their speed through construction zones. This creates a safer environment for everyone.
