SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - An area school board will vote on a new district medical marijuana policy.
The chairman of the Suwannee County School Board says this new policy is being put into place to comply with state legislation that came down last year.
Marijuana has long been banned on school campuses, but Florida voters legalized it for medical purposes in 2016. Now, the state wants each school district to come up with a policy on dealing with it.
In Suwannee County, school personnel will not be allowed to dispense medical marijuana, only a student's caregiver can come to campus and give it to them.
The prescription drugs cannot be stored on school grounds. A parent or guardian has to bring it to campus, administer it, them immediately get off school grounds.
The board has also agreed to proceed with adopting this policy, as long as it does not jeopardize the district's federal funding.
