SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - It’s official: Suwannee County is the first district in our area to approve Florida’s new Guardian Program.

Sheriff Sam St. John tells WTXL ABC 27 he already has a few candidates in mind for this program, including a few district employees who are former law-enforcement or ex-military.

Sheriff says he’s been working with the district to do research and look at what would make a program like this successful ever since the Florida legislature passed the School Safety Bill in response to the Parkland school shooting.

WTXL will have more on this story tonight at 11.

SUWANNEE COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - The first school district in our area may vote "yes" to Florida's Guardian Program.

The program allows certain trained district employees to concealed carry on campus.

Although WTXL has heard push back from some Suwannee County parents, it seems the superintendent, most of the school board and the sheriff are on board for a guardian program.

The sheriff says he already has a few candidates in mind for this program, a few district employees who are former law enforcement or ex-military.

Superintendent Ted Roush says he hasn't had any board members speak out strongly against the program.

"We are in strong support of placing a regular school resource officer in each school and have negotiated a contract that will do just by the start of the next school year, pending school board approval," said Roush. "In addition, we are also proposing the implementation of the guardian program by the start of the new school year."

The school board meeting starts Tuesday night at 6 p.m.
