SUWANNEE CO., Fla. (WTXL) - A Facebook post spreading misinformation about a crash in Suwannee County may also be spreading a virus according to the Suwannee County Sheriff's Office (SCSO).
The post is circulating on Facebook with the headline "2 Moms, 5 Kids Killed in a Car Crash in [blank] County". The same headline can be seen over and over, with different counties inserted in the headline.
The posts, seemingly published by "countysfire.info", go as far back as last Wednesday, but a majority of the posts were published on Saturday.
SCSO says if you open the post you could get a virus.
The post says it was authored by "police" but it is not authentic.
SCSO tells WTXL they are working to get to the bottom of the false report. They also recommend people check their website directly before clicking on suspicious links.
They are asking anyone who knows anything about the post, or wants to report suspicious online activity, to call the sheriff's office at (386) 382-2222.
