SANAA, Yemen (AP) — A military official says a suspected U.S. drone strike has killed six alleged al-Qaida militants in one of the group's former strongholds in a central Yemeni province.

The official says the attack early Thursday in the province of Marib targeted a car carrying the suspected militants.

He says five were Yemenis and the sixth was believed to be of an Arab nationality. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

Yemen is on a high state of alert after authorities revealed an al-Qaida plot to target foreign embassies and international shipping lane in the Red Sea.

The U.S. and British embassies have evacuated embassy staff over a threatened attack.

Six U.S. drone strikes over the past 10 days have killed a total of 29 suspected militants.
