Suspect in shooting near Valdosta State University arrested

VALDOSTA, Ga. (WTXL) - Valdosta Police have arrested two teens after they got a tip about one of them who they believe was involved in a shooting near Valdosta State University.

On July 12, 2017 at approximately 12 p.m., Valdosta Police Officers received a tip from a citizen stating that they had seen Aliza Dejun Dickey in Albany. 

Dickey was wanted for a shooting on July 7th at the Azalea Woods apartment complex at 811 West Mary Street in Valdosta.

The citizen told them that they believed Dickey was en route to Valdosta and provided officers with a vehicle description, to include a license plate number.

VPD says Dickey was riding with another wanted teen, Ronald Welsch., Both Dickey and Welsch had outstanding felony warrants for their arrests.  

Around 1:15 p.m., officers stopped the white Chevrolet Impala Dickey and Welsch were riding in and arrested them. Welsch was found to be in possession of a stolen handgun. 

VPD says that they were also called by the Lakeland Police Department, about to Welsch and Dickey, who were needed for questioning in reference to a Monday morning shooting. 

After, both Welsch and Dickey were transported to Lowndes County Jail.

Ronald Welsch, 18, will face: 

  • 4 Felony counts of Theft by Entering Auto (FELONY)
  • 4 counts of Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor (Misdemeanor)
  • He is also facing charges of Theft by Receiving Stolen Property (Firearm) (FELONY)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon (FELONY)
  • Possession of a Firearm by a Minor (Misdemeanor)

Valdosta Police Chief Brian Childress said this in reference to Welsch’s arrest: “Valdosta Police have identified Welsch as one of the ringleaders of the multiple vehicle break ins that have been occurring across the city.”

Aliza DeJun Dickey, 19, will face:

  • The current outstanding warrant for Aggravated Assault (the Azalea Woods shooting) (FELONY)
  • 3 additional counts of Aggravated Assault (FELONY),
  • Aggravated Battery (FELONY),
  • Possession of a Firearm during the Commission of a Crime (FELONY).
