NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (AP) - A surfer escaped with just a minor injury after being bitten by a shark off New Smyrna Beach.

The Daytona Beach News-Journal reports the 21-year-old man suffered the first shark bite of the season.

Volusia County Beach Patrol Capt. Tammy Marris says the surfer was bit Saturday at about 1:30 p.m. He suffered a minor laceration to the hand.

Volusia and Brevard counties were named as having the most shark bites in 2012 by University of Florida shark researchers. Each county had eight reports of shark bites last year. Most of the bites off Volusia beaches are minor.
