TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Students at Florida State University are hoping to build bridges and get to know each other better thanks to a special event on campus.

The Longest Table at FSU kicked off Tuesday on Langford Green.

Let's take a look at this event from a few years ago.

Students, faculty and community leaders sat down to talk about issues people might not bring up at the dinner table.

But that's the point of something like this. An organization called 'The Power of We', along with The Village Square, hope Tuesday will be an opportunity for students to really listen to each other and develop understanding and respect.

"The point of The Longest Table is to convene the community to engage in honest conversation. We truly believe that the seed of collaboration is conversation," said Isa Colli, the chair of the Power of WE. "A lot of times throughout our hustle and bustle, our daily lives, we don't actually engage. So, this is the opportunity to sit with a stranger and talk and see what we can do to better our community."

Tuesday night's event was sold-out. Chef Art Smith is the special guest speaker.

Another Longest Table event is coming up later this month.

It's called an "in-home and public spaces" edition. That will be Sunday, April 22.
