HAMILTON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - A water main break that caused extensive flooding at a local elementary school is causing the school district to delay the return of students following winter break.
A main water pipe failure inside Hamilton County Elementary School on Dec. 23 caused extensive flooding of the building.
According to school superintendent Rex Mitchell, the repairs from the resulting damage to the school must be completed before students are allowed to return.
Mitchell stated as a result of the continuing repair process, elementary school students that were scheduled to return on Jan. 3, will now return on Jan. 7.
Mitchell said normal school operations for all students of the Hamilton County School District will resume on Jan. 7 as well.
Water line break at Hamilton County Elementary causes damages
HAMILTON COUNTY, Fla. (WTXL) - Clean up is underway at a local elementary school after a water main break left inches of water in all the hallways.
According to school superintendent Rex Mitchell, Hamilton County Elementary School had a water main break between Sunday evening and Monday afternoon in the 5th and 6th grade classroom wing.
He says there was enough water to cover all of the hallways, which is about a couple inches deep. All of the water lines run overhead, and there was ceiling damage in the room where the break occurred.
There isn’t much damage in the front wing, which has the administrative offices and cafeteria. However, in the two other wings, which are the classroom wings, almost every room had water in it.
The district is still unable to assess the damage.
Mitchell says a company called ServPro has been working on cleaning up the floors and drying out the school. The goal is to have that done by Friday or Saturday.
At that point, the district will start looking at possible adjustments to the school schedule, if necessary. As of right now, students and teachers are scheduled to return on January 3rd.
