(WTXL) - Students at schools across the country are organizing walkouts to protest gun violence one-month since the Parkland school shooting.
Organizers say nearly 3,000 walkouts are planned.
Walkouts are expected to take place at schools ranging from the elementary to college level.
Students say they will leave class at 10 a.m. local time and demonstrate for 17-minutes. That is one minute for each of the victims at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.
Some schools have applauded students for taking a stand, while others are threatening to punish students.
In Colquitt County, Superintendent Doug Howell says they will not participate in the national walkout Wednesday.
He believes it puts students in an unsafe position and says schools cannot legally participate in any kind of walkout.
However, he says, they will observe a 17-second moment of silence for the victims inside classrooms followed by a presentation on school safety.
