TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - On Monday, a tenth grade James S. Rickards High student was arrested after it was reported that he posted a video to social media of him holding a gun in a classroom.
The Leon County Sheriff's Office says that a school administrator and a school resource deputy received a tip that a student may have a gun after someone saw a video on the social media mobile app, Snapchat, that showed a student with a gun in the classroom.
The sheriff's office says that when the school resource deputy saw the video, it was confirmed that it was taken in the student's second period class.
According to the sheriff's office report, the video showed the student, who is 16 years old, taking out a nickel plated semi-automatic handgun out of a backpack, and he showed it to the camera before putting it back. The caption of the video was "Have it with me at all times," and it was followed by a picture of two guns.
The school resource deputy found the student in his fifth period class, where he was taken into custody, according to the report.
Officers say that the backpack was searched, and inside was a nickel plated 9mm semi-automatic handgun. However, it was not loaded, and there was no ammunition found.
The sheriff's office says that an investigation through the School Resource Unit "found no evidence that the student planned any violence."
According to the report, the student was arrested and is charged with Possession of a Firearm on School Grounds.
The sheriff's office says that the investigation into how the he came to be in possession of the firearm continues.
