TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - A Florida State University student that was paralyzed in a shooting at the Strozier Library in 2014 is now asking for $5 million from Florida State University.
The attorney on behalf of Ronny Ahmed sent a letter this week to the university saying he will not sue if FSU agrees to pay that amount.
A notice of intent to sue the university was sent on November 16.
In a letter to the university, the attorney says the facts of suit do not appear to be a "case of a madman opening fire at random with no opportunity in stopping him."
The attorney claims Myron May's suspicious activity should have been identified as a threat by the security guards at Strozier Library, calling the the security provided by the university "negligent."
They claim that surveillance videos clearly show that while a security guard was at the entrance of the library, the guard leaves before his replacement arrives. They also say that the guard that replaced the first paid no mind to foot traffic, leading up to Myron May's attempt to get into the library.
However, they say that, "He [Ahmed] is a Seminole through and through. He wants to graduate from Florida State University. He would like to avoid a lawsuit."
The letter asserts that when you add up the past medical, future medical, lost earning capacity, costs of a caretaker. and pain and suffering, the damages "easily" exceed $10 million.
But the letter says, "Mr. Ahmed is willing to recover less to resolve this matter without the mental anguish of suing the University he loves and attends. He will settle this case for $5,000,000."
They claim that the $5 million will, "just get him [Ahmed] the basics."
Ahmed was shot several times on the campus in November of 2014.
Florida State sent out this response to the incident:
"FSU is aware of the notice of intent to sue, but we are not aware of any lawsuit being filed. The university has shown great care and concern for Ronny and has provided support for him and his family. We are disappointed anyone would question FSU's response to the shooting."
