COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WTXL) - Deputies in Colquitt County said that a man was killed when a stray bullet from celebratory gunfire hit him in the head on New Year's Day.
The Colquitt County Sheriff's Office said that Alonzo Cortez was shot and killed shortly after midnight on Sunday by celebratory gunfire.
They said that the shooting happened outside 124 Yates Lane in Moultrie.
Deputies said that he and a group of other people were standing outside celebrating, when a bullet came down and struck him in the head, killing him.
They said that have the projectile but because there were multiple guns and fireworks going off that evening, the case will likely go unsolved.
An autopsy is being conducted.
The Sheriff's Office is reminding residents not to recklessly shoot weapons as it could end up being fatal like with this case.
