TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - As many more head outside to enjoy the summer sunshine, it is important to remember that heat can still cause some issues when it comes to our health.
Leon County Department of Health's Claudia Blackburn stopped by today to discuss the importance of staying cool and safe amidst the summer heat.
When checking the weather, Blackburn says it is definitely important to keep an eye out for the heat index and try to stay in air conditioning whenever it rises, especially between 10am-4pm when hot temperatures can peak.
Blackburn suggested wearing light colored and lightweight clothing could also help when working outside. Drinking plenty of water, preferrably 16-32 ounces every hour, is also important to ensure staying hydrated.
One thing to look out for this summer is any sign of heat exhaustion. Blackburn says symptoms of feeling faint or excessive sweating may be a sign. She suggests anyone experiencing these symptoms should seek shade, lay down, and drink water. If nausea or vomiting occurs, the Department of Health advises seeking medical attention.
To avoid extreme heat exhaustion, Blackburn also stressed the danger of leaving children and pets inside cars. The Department of Health urges anyone who sees someone in an unattended parked car to call 911.
