BOSTON (AP) — Vice President Joe Biden says the courage shown by Boston Marathon survivors and those who lost loved ones is an inspiration for other Americans dealing with loss and tragedy.

Biden spoke Tuesday at a ceremony in Boston honoring those killed and injured in the bombings near the finish line a year ago. He says four marathon survivors who spoke before he did showed "pure courage."

He also says that though he's not a Boston sports fan, Boston is an incredible city.

In Washington, President Barack Obama planned to observe the anniversary with a private moment of silence at the White House.

There will also be a flag-raising and a moment of silence at the marathon finish line at 2:49 p.m., when the bombs went off.
