TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - More than $2 billion could be saved annually if the state would spend taxpayer money more prudently, according to a report from the Florida Government Efficiency Task Force.
The group highlighted some of their suggestions that will be passed along to the governor and lawmakers in advance of preparing next year's state budget.
Among a list of 29 recommendations for 2017, the task force says major reforms are needed within the Department of Corrections.
"It has become more and more of a bipartisan effort, and less about being weak on crime," said Dominic Calabro, president of Florida TaxWatch. "There are some offenders who are actually going to become worse offenders by staying in prison, without the rehabilitation, without the transition."
Calabro said now is the time to implement some of the group's suggestions, as the state faces a significantly smaller budget surplus this year than it has recently.
