TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement Commissoner Richard Swearingen stressed Monday how important it is for people to speak up when they see something suspicious.

"Somebody knew something, somebody saw something, somebody heard something, and they didn't report it because they thought they would be labeled a racist an islamaphobe or a crazy for just being suspicious," said Swearingen.

The state law enforcement department's request for Governor Rick Scott to enhance anti-terrorism laws came just days after the terror attacks in New Jersey and New York. During his presentation, Swearingen said the country has seen an increase in terrorist related activity and leaders needed to step up more.

"These laws will give the state the authority that currently only federal agencies can pursue. State and local law enforcement will be able to pursue the same investigations that currently can only be pursued federally," said Swearingen.
