TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (The News Service of Florida) - Independence Day is known for parades, backyard barbecues, and fireworks.

Every year, firefighters typically respond to more than 100 accidents from people not properly using fireworks.

State law limits sales to relatively safe devices like sparklers and fountains, while banning the sale of bottle rockets, roman candles and other airborne fireworks.

However, thousands of Floridians buy fireworks through a loophole in state law that allows sales for 'agricultural purposes' like scaring away birds from crops.

A spokesperson for the State Fire Marshal's Office, says people should avoid buying fireworks that require the agricultural waiver, and enjoy public shows, instead.

"There are some wonderful, professional shows that are put on by communities all over the state," said Casia Sinco. "We encourage people to go to those shows and leave it to the professionals."

Sinco says parents should not give sparklers to their young children, and you should always keep water and a fire extinguisher nearby.
