TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - StarMetro, one of the city's public transit systems is celebrating 45 years of service this month.

The company is offering free rides on all its fixed route buses to celebrate this milestone.

Since opening in 1973, StarMetro has been focused on making improvements to their system to add value to the rider's experience.

As a result of the growing population, StarMetro now provides a service that consists of 75 buses and a weekend trolley service.

One rider says their are many reasons to why public transportation is important in the community one of which includes safety.

"Its very critical. As Tallahassee continues to grow, it gets increasingly troublesome and a lot of people don't know how to drive so to be safe I ride the bus," said Larry Love, a faithful rider.

Along with the free rides, StarMetro served refreshments and handed out giveaways at the C.K. Steel Plaza today.
